Although each state regulates the practice of veterinary technology differently, most candidates must pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination.

The American Association for Laboratory Animal Science also offers a certification which although not required for entry into the field, can demonstrate a higher level of competency to employers.

Many veterinary practices will require candidates to have both a question and answer interview, and a working interview. A working interview is a good gauge of a candidate’s ability to adapt to working with a team in a hectic work environment.

The working interview could consist of anything from restocking supplies, assisting with animal care, or helping with clerical and administrative duties.
